Case Study (Intellectual Property Management for a Retailer)

Intellectual property protection is critical to fostering innovation. Without protection of ideas, businesses would not reap the full benefits of their inventions and would focus less on research and development. It is vital to understand the importance of protecting and managing the ideas behind the business, in order to derive the biggest profit.

With the SCOPE IP™ Program, it is able to conduct an assessment of the company to better assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Intellectual Property deployment and Intellectual Property Management (“IPM”).

The IPM Team Members were trained on the concepts of Intellectual Property, and met regularly to review, brainstorm and finalize the IPM Roadmap strategy. Company’s Mission and Vision were formulated to enhance key competencies so that the company could leverage on her benefit advantages to be more competitive. PEST analysis was conducted to provide an understanding of market potential and situation, particularly indicating growth or decline, and as such the position, potential and direction.

Lastly, Value Chain and SWOT Analysis highlighted the changing needs and expectations of the targeted customers, the benefit drivers and advantages and the intellectual capital potential of the Company. Finally, the Company will develop various strategic and tactical options via the SWOT Matrix to produce issues, which can readily translate into short, medium and long term strategic initiatives and actions.

The SCOPE IP Program offered a methodology that examines the company’s IP management processes in eight areas of assessment. It will generate a report on identifying areas for improvement with strategic growth options based on current and future needs of the company.

Through this program, the IPM Team, having worked with EWI Consultants, now find themselves in a better position to exploit opportunities and minimize business risks. Several capabilities were thus developed during this program:
